Broken Spring Replacement

Torsion and extension springs replaced on the spot, with the door rebalanced and tested.

Typical price $250 to $450 · per door, both springs, parts and labor

Overview

A garage door spring does the heavy lifting: it carries most of the door's weight so the opener only has to guide it.

When one snaps you hear a bang, the door goes dead, and the opener strains or lifts the door a few inches before giving up. Our trucks carry torsion and extension springs for every standard residential door, so almost every spring job is finished in one visit.

What is included

  • Torsion spring replacement (single and double spring systems)
  • Extension spring replacement with safety cables
  • High-cycle spring upgrades for busy households
  • Spring rebalancing, cable inspection and full safety check on every job

Signs you need this

Sound familiar?

If any of these match, stop using the door and call. Running a door with a failed part damages the opener and the panels, and turns a small repair into a big one.

  • A loud bang from the garage, then the door will not open
  • Door lifts a few inches and stops, or feels extremely heavy by hand
  • A visible gap in the spring above the door
  • Door slams shut or drops faster than it should
  • Cables look loose or have come off the drums

Questions

Broken Spring Replacement: common questions

Why replace both springs if only one broke?

Springs wear at the same rate. When one fails the other is usually close behind, and mismatched tension makes the door lift unevenly. Replacing both costs less than a second visit.

Can I open the door with a broken spring?

Please do not. A standard door weighs 150 to 300 pounds. Without the spring, the opener can burn out and the door can drop. Leave it and call us.

How long do garage door springs last?

Standard springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles, roughly 7 to 10 years for a family that uses the door a few times a day. High-cycle springs last two to three times longer.
